CID Malaria Program Manager Awash has extensive national and international experience on various aspects of malaria which include research, policy development, management and programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation. He did his post-doctoral work at the CDC, Atlanta, and was involved in malaria research (laboratory-based and field) for three years. Awash was the Director of the malaria and other vector borne diseases control programme in Ethiopia for five years. The Ethiopian Programme was the largest in Africa with over 300 staff members. Ethiopia is one of the most affected epidemic-prone countries with over 40 million of the population exposed to malaria risk. His responsibilities involved both management and technical aspects. He has been a WHO staff member since 1990, working as a malaria expert, coordinator for country support; technical coordinator and acting programme manager for the WHO Roll Back Malaria. He has taken a very active roll in country support with particular focus in Africa in resource mobilisation, programme design, implementation, evaluation of programmes; monitoring of drug ressistance and in epidemic prevention and control activities. Awash has been seconded to Harvard since September 2001 for a period of three years as Malaria Program manager at CID. He will work with the malaria team at CID and the HSPH to promote research and control efforts and to provide direct technical support to countries. Provision of technical support to a selected number of countries to develop their respective strategic plans of work for malaria control for submittal to the Global Health Fund is of immediate priority.
